Bob Allen Resigns-Sort Of

Bob Allen is playing us.

The Florida state representative resigned– effective February 15, 2008–after his conviction of soliciting an undercover police officer for sex in the restroom of a county park.

Apparently–according to a spokesperson for Florida Speaker of the House, Marco Rubio–that date was Allen’s choice.

Really? He gets a choice?

How’s this sound? Effective immediately.

Marco Rubio reportedly put forth an ultimatum to Bob, “resign by close of business today (5:00pm, November 16th) or a House committee will be formed to investigate and expel you from the House.”

At the ninth hour–4:43pm Friday–old Bob responded with the resignation letter that keeps him in office until February 15.

“I will need to resign my elected position …effective February 15, 2008, or when the Secretary of State can certify a replacement through a General Election.”

Meaning–

Bob could still be hanging around the House way past February 15th.

Honestly–should we be surprised by this classic Allen doublespeak?

Furthermore, a 1934 opinion issued by the Florida Supreme Court states that “a constitutional officer may , under special conditions, rescind his resignation before the effective date of such resignation”. (Gloria123/Smashed Frog)

Bob’s playing both sides of the legal fence.

Should Allen win on appeal, he could jerk back his resignation before the ink is dry on the judge’s order.

Marco! Rubio!

Let the expulsion begin.
