Do the Democrats Really Have a Majority in the Senate?

Nancy Pelosi and Harry ReidCross-posted with Thoughts on the World.

Why can’t this Democratic majority get anything done? They promised to end corruption, the Iraq War, and so much more. I’m so disappointed. We finally give them a majority, and what do they do with it? Nothing.

But is it their fault? They have a majority you say. 51-49; it’s not like you need 60 votes to pass a bill, and 66 to be veto proof.

But wait! Super-Truthman says no to Republican lies and propaganda! Let’s think this whole majority thing through.

First of all, be serious, Lieberman isn’t a Democrat. So what, he caucuses with them; that doesn’t mean he votes like them. He voted ‘yes’ on the FISA amendment, ‘no’ on the Senate statement to condemn Gonzales, and of course, sponsored the unforgettable Kyl/Lieberman amendment, which originally threatened to “combat, contain and [stop]” Iran via “military instruments.”

Hmmm… That makes it 50-50 you say! Wait, there’s more:

Remember Tim Johnson, the senator from South Dakota who was hospitalized in December and is still there, unable to vote? Basically, if you can’t vote, well, you can’t vote. And that means there’s one less Democrat voting.

49-50?! What, the Democrats, in the minority?! That’s not what we ordered!

On a more personal note, regular readers might have guessed that this is a little further to the left than I like to be. I did try to write this article in a different voice (just to see what would happen), but that doesn’t mean I’ve been suddenly radicalized by Reddit.com or any others. It’s just my position on this issue. Besides, Political Grind needs some more liberal posts!

You attempted to give them a majority - I stopped you! Bwa-ha-ha-ha!

Too many that fall in the middle of the road category and can switch to either side at any time….

Yes, there are many moderate Democrats, but I'd definitely describe Joe Lieberman as hawkish.

I guess if you want more liberal posters, you'll have to go get them. May I suggest the group that screamed "trademark infringement?"

As long as that's all you scream - unless "Move Trademark Infringement On.org" will work…

Democrats, Republicans is there really much difference? They may have different ideologies and opinions but they both govern ineffectively. True the Donkeys don't have a clear majority but even if they owned the Senate 70-30, they'd still not get much done. That's just the way politics have become. All talk, all blame, little action. Vote all the bums out we say!

Well, I thought I'd wander over to the <a href="http://www.berkeleydailyplanet.com/article.cfm?is...Daily Planet</a> and find some liberals for y'all. But I'm really not sure they'd be so inclined after reading this patronizing article. Waitress Polly is thinking about placing an ad over there for her shop! Hmmm… well, maybe not. As far as changes with the Democrats in place. Well, they've kind of brought a bull into the china shop. That Pelosi sure knows how to use the microphone, that's all I'll say.

Patronizing?

In my opinion the Democ Rats really Do a a majority… Just think of what they have to show… Widdle Wesael, Putz Pelosi, Steny lap dog, Schmuckie schumer, Daffy Durbin, High Flying Harkin,.. and let us never forget the chappaquiddick SCHWImming 90 proofed one.. well a Majority of Idiots is really what they can Count on. As far as Accomplishment in this Congress… NADA.. Zero.. Zippo.. unless Non Binding resolutions mean anything…

Hey Len — Welcome to PG! Next time you should tell us what you really think. LOL

Hey Kickstand - that's the point, to make sure the congress gets nothing done. Every day they're in session is another day our freedoms are in jeopardy… Where have I heard that before?

The problem is they do crap half-assed, both dems and repubs because they don't care. We want an end to the war but yet not one piece of legislation actually saying the war is over has been introduced. We want real solutions to immigration but they introduce a recycled version of the 80's act which put us in the situation we are in. They talk about the economy and the middle class worker but none of them can answer correctly what the cost of a gallon of milk is. We need relief from rising health care costs which can be done but they want to give us government-managed care instead. We want alternative fuels because we should not be giving 80% of our gas dollars to government-owned oil companies. Most of our oil money does not go to the Middle East, it goes to places like Russia and Venuzuleza. Are you happy with millions of dollars going into the coffers of Putin and Chavez? It doesn't matter which side controls what, none of them have our interests in hand. This is the saddest part of all. They just give us lip service and heavily-controlled political campaigns. It is telling when the first orders of business by the 2007 Congress were to congratulate every college football team that won a bowl game.

Lieberman may be hawkish, but until George Bush was elected you were still allowed to be hawkish and a liberal - and there's no doubt that Joe votes on social issues (and economic issues) like a liberal. Today you have the democratic party goon squad MoveOn.org furiously attacking any party member who bucks the anti-war orders (like rep. Brian Baird). It's crazy!
