Liar-in-Chief
President Bush now has his own proposal for tricking the American public into accepting an amnesty bill for illegal aliens.
The past six weeks have been busy in the campaign for amnesty for illegal aliens. First came the Kennedy-McCain bill in the senate. Then came the Flake-Gutierrez (STRIVE) bill in the house. Neither bill received a warm reception. Out on the campaign trail, McCain got an earful from angry Iowa voters who are fed up with illegal immigration so he no longer wants to sponsor the bill; that job now falls to his faithful lackey Lindsey Graham (R-SC). Amnesty supporters aren’t really worried about the senate though, since the bill passed there last year and the election didn’t cost them any supporters. The house is another story; last year’s amnesty bill never made it out of committee. Amnesty supporters picked up about seven supporters in the election but they will still need at least forty Republican votes to pass a bill. With the house Republicans still opposed to amnesty, the Democratic house leadership turned to President Bush to use his influence to get Republican votes. The result was the White House Comprehensive Immigration Reform bill, released quietly on Thursday, March 29. Bush made a speech about it on Monday, April 9.
It is dubious how much influence a lame duck president, with a 33% approval rating (and a 60% disapproval rating) can have. There seems to be little political downside for anyone to oppose the president, even Republicans. Nonetheless the White House tried. The new plan offers little new. There is a new emphasis on long overdue border enforcement, but for the most part it is the same basic deal as all of the other “comprehensive” bills. It offers more border enforcement in exchange for amnesty for aliens living illegally in this country, which was the basis of the disastrous 1986 Amnesty bill. If this bill were to pass, just like in 1986, the enforcement would likely never happen. One needs to look no further than Bush’s new plan, for evidence of empty promises. Last October, to great fanfare, Bush signed a bill to build 850 miles of fence on the Mexican border, but in his new bill that same fence is described as extending just 370 miles. Just six months later the border fence has already been cut in half!
President Bush insists that his bill doesn’t offer amnesty, but that is only by his own unique tortured definition of the term. Illegal aliens, he insists, wouldn’t get “amnesty” because they would be punished with fines, and be made to jump through all kinds of bureaucratic hoops to get permanent legal residence or citizenship. Whatever kind of legal status the proposed bill assigns today’s illegal aliens, the bottom line is that they will be legally allowed to continue to live and work in this country; to anyone with an ounce of common sense or honesty, that is the definition of “amnesty”. One particularly absurd bit of bureaucratic nonsense is the “touchback” provision, first proposed by Congressman Mike Pence (R-IN). This requires that illegal aliens leave the country before being allowed to reenter legally, but in this case “leave the country” means stepping across the Mexican (or Canadian) border for a few days or perhaps a few seconds. Since reentry would be guaranteed before the alien steps over the line, the whole exercise would just be political theater. This illustrates the extremes that supporters are willing to go to in order to trick voters into supporting an amnesty bill.
Illegal aliens have stolen US residency, a very valuable and highly sought after status. Law abiding foreigners endure waits of months or years for their chance to come to the US , some spending a fortune on legal fees and applications, but those who break the law are to be rewarded by this bill. Imagine the situation if we were talking about something more tangible but less valuable? Let’s imagine stealing cars for instance. Can you imagine any court issuing a sentence to a car thief that involves paying a fine, but allows him to keep the stolen car? Auto thefts would soar! The solution to illegal immigration should not be about punishing illegal aliens, or selling them the residency that they have already stolen. Illegal immigration will never be stopped until the US government insists on enforcing immigration law and deports foreigners working in the US illegally. Amnesty for illegal aliens encourages more foreigners to sneak in. Encouraging illegal crossing, while at the same time putting up barriers to it, is an unworkable compromise.
The big business lobby, who funds the majority of presidential and senate campaigns, demands amnesty for its illegal alien workforce. Big business has grown addicted to illegal alien slave labor. Alcoholics will promise to stop drinking tomorrow in exchange for one more drink and then make exactly the same promise the next day; “tomorrow” never comes. Like alcoholics, big business promises to stop hiring illegal aliens if only we promise not to deport their current illegal workforce. That was exactly the deal in the 1986 amnesty and we now have at least four times (perhaps ten times) the number of illegal aliens now that we did then. For the American citizen, voting for that proposal twenty-one years ago could be seen as naive but voting for it this time would be just plain stupid. Like any addict, the Chamber of Commerce will promise anything to get their amnesty; the consequences to the nation are not their concern.
Why does President Bush, year after year, push for amnesty? First he has always been a loyal advocate for big business. His father was a businessman and he is a businessman, with an MBA from Harvard. By contrast, G. W. Bush has always treated the American worker with an attitude somewhere between indifference and contempt. Secondly, Bush is a committed globalist, who sees the USA less as a nation and more as a free trade zone. If only he could erase national borders, economic efficiency would improve and corporate profits would increase. His people, the wealthy elite that is, would benefit. Thirdly, whether it is enthusiastically waving the Mexican flag at a Cinco de Mayo celebration while he was Texas Governor or delivering entire political speeches in Spanish, Bush has an affection for Latinos that is unusual for an American political leader. Indeed he seems more concerned about the future of poor people in Mexico and Central America, than he is for poor people in the USA. Lastly, favoring Latinos has worked for Bush as he has picked up a lot of Latino votes over the years.
Opponents of amnesty for illegal aliens have not been as visible on the streets as advocates for foreigners who entered this country illegally, but that may be about to change. The Federation
for American Immigration Reform (www.FAIRUS.org) and radio talk show host Roger Hedgecock are sponsoring a rally across from the White House on Sunday, April 22, followed by three days of lobbying on Capitol Hill. In a separate but related event, there is a planned protest whereby long haul truckers will rally in Washington, with their rigs, during that same week, to protest NAFTA provisions that will allow thousands of Mexican trucks, with Mexican drivers on US roads.
NumbersUSA.org has well documented the devastating consequences to the nation if this bill were ever to pass. It would be the greatest sellout to special interest groups in American history. The prospects for this bill now lie with the American people. If they make their voices heard and write their congressmen the bill will again fail and the sovereignty of the USA will be preserved. Over the next twenty one months, the American citizenry will have to be particularly vigilant to put pressure on the congress to protect them from that traitorous, lying, globalist buffoon currently in the White House.

The whole system of a lame duck presidency seems absurd to me. There\'s little worry in opposing them as they plough rampantly on \'building a legacy\'.
It seems the bug has even caught on in the UK - Tony Blair announced he wouldn\'t stay on past May and has been a lame duck ever since. Not content with matters close to home he seems keen to be seen as a worldwide facilitator lining himself up for a nice after-dinner speaking career.
Regarding your very enjoyable post Stuart - I laughed out loud a number of times and the finish pleased me enormously … \"Over the next twenty one months, the American citizenry will have to be particularly vigilant to put pressure on the congress to protect them from that traitorous, lying, globalist buffoon currently in the White House.\"
